USL Announces Teams Can Make Five Substitutions For 2020 Season
The USL has approved that teams now have five substitutions per game instead of three for the 2020 season. However, to avoid too much extra stoppage to the game, these five substitutions must be made in three groups or less. If a substitution is made at halftime, it does not count as one of the three groups. This is because teams and players have not been able to practice and train at normal amounts so their stamina and fitness levels will most likely be lower.
This decision made by the USL Board of Governors comes in line with the temporary law amendment made by the International Football Association Board in May. As of now, all other league rules are the same, except for fan attendance. More information will come out on that closer to July 11th, but for now we know that the USL has no say in it and the decision is up to Birmingham and Alabama regulations.
There is no doubt this change will help Legion a lot throughout the season. Since we have so many news players and so many players who could have a big part in our games, being able to bring on an extra two players could be a huge advantage for us against teams this season. Especially considering this season will have more games played in a shorter amount of time, which means injuries and fatigue will be a problem for everyone.
