Kasim returns to Legion FC

Legion FC announced that midfielder Prosper Kasim had signed a new, multi-year deal.

The Ghanaian played a significant role in the Legion’s offensive success and hopefully Kasim will contribute to the squad as he did back in 2019. As one of the most well-known and loved players within the squad, it is safe to say that fans are hoping for more memories, such as his stoppage time goal to give the Boys in Black their first ever victory.

“We are excited to bring Prosper back to Birmingham on a new multi-year deal,” said Legion FC President and General Manager Jay Heaps in a press release. “He fits well in our locker room, and he has played a large part in the club’s growth on the field since our inaugural season.”

Kasim played in 15 of the club’s 17 matches in the 2020 season and was tied for third on the team in goals (three) and assists (three), was third in shots with 20 and was fourth in chances created with 12. The midfielder completed 81.3 percent of his passes, tallied 15 tackles defensively, had 12 interceptions, nine clearances and three blocks.

In 2019, Kasim, nicknamed “Starboy” by Legion fans, led Legion FC in appearances (35), starts (34) and minutes played (2,845) across all USL competitions. He won the Legion FC Golden Boot award as the team leader in goals scored in the regular season (seven) and was first on the team in shots (59) and chances created (53), third in passes (1,057), tied for fourth in interceptions (30) and fifth in tackles (49) and assists (two).

Kasim joined Legion FC in 2019 after spending two years with IFK Göteborg of Sweden’s top division, Allsvenskan. The Ghanaian spent the 2017 season on loan with Norrby IF of the Swedish second division. The winger made 21 appearances and scored three goals, adding two assists along the way.

In 2018, he was on loan to Mjällby AIF in Sweden’s second division, where he scored 10 goals with three assists in 27 matches and helped Mjällby gain promotion to the Allsvenskan.

Legion FC Head Coach Tom Soehn tracked Kasim with Ghanaian club Inter Allies since the player was just 16 years old. He then closely followed Kasim’s career in Sweden before bringing him to the United States to join Legion FC of the USL.
