It’s official. JJ is back for a third time!

Former Kentucky Wildcat and Legion star JJ Williams has officially been signed to a multi-year deal, pending league and federation approval. Williams previously competed for Legion FC during the 2019 and 2020 seasons, but in my opinion, his 2019 season was most enjoyable to watch, filled with memories including several flexing celebrations and a thrilling last-second goal to give the Legion its first ever USL Playoff victory.

“After two successful loan spells with the club, we are excited to add JJ on a more permanent basis ahead of the 2021 season,” said Jay Heaps, Legion FC president and general manager in a press release. “He will help strengthen our attacking core, and his fierce competitiveness is a great addition to our locker room.”

Williams made 23 appearances for Birmingham in 2019 and led the squad goals scored (eight), finished third in shots (41) and eighth in chances created (15). After being signed by Atlanta United FC in early 2020, he returned to the Legion on loan toward the end of the season, collecting two assists, six chances created, 10 shots, 12 clearances, five interceptions and seven tackles in five appearances. While it was not as solid as his 2019 form, we can only hope that Williams will return to The Magic City and once again discover his excellent finishing form with loads of goals.

“I’m blessed to be back in Birmingham this year and to give my full focus to one team,” said Williams in the press release. “I’m looking forward to playing with this talented group of guys. This is our year. Hammer Down!”
