The Auburn Tigers (4-3-4, 0-3) are set to host the Vanderbilt Commodores (8-1-1, 2-1) this Friday night at the Auburn Soccer Complex at 5 p.m. CT.
The Tigers will look to bounce back after a rough three game stretch against SEC opponents to start conference play this season. Auburn has gone 0-3 in that stretch being outscored 3 goals to 0. Despite loosing three straight matchups Auburn has seemingly been in all of the games until the final moments, so it will be a test of making the most of the chances which are given.
Vanderbilt has been a Dominic force on the road so far this year posting a 4-0 record in all road contests.
“This matchup will be fun because it’s a team we haven’t played in a while,” Tigers head coach Karen Hoppa said. “We expect Vanderbilt to be a very good possession team and to be really dangerous on attacks, so it’s a good thing our defense has been playing so well. Our offense just has to find a way to get behind their backs and create some strong goal-scoring opportunities.”
In addition, the Commodores have thrived behind the two goalkeeper pairing of Kate Devine and Sara Wojdelko, who have led the team to eight shutouts over ten matches.
Midfielder graduate Raegan Kelley has led Vannderbilt in scoring and assist with 5 goals and 8 assist. This has helped the Commodores outscore opponents 26-3 throughout this year.
The backline for the Tigers, most notably M.E. Craven Hailey Whittaker who will be anchoring down the middle of the field, will have to be on their game if auburn will want to pull out a win.
Anna Haddock will have to work some magic of hers, along with Carly Thatcher and Syndie Thibodaux. If those three players are able to push up in the attacking third Auburn should see some favorable matchups and plenty of shots on goal.
Auburn does own the series record at 10-8-4, but did loose the last matchup in the fall of 2018 3-0.
The Tigers will look to get back to their winnings ways against the Vanderbilt Commodores this Friday night at 5 p.m. CT. This match will be highlighted as it is Alumni Night for Auburn Soccer. The game can be seen live on SEC Network+ or heard live on WEGL 91.1 FM in conjunction with the Auburn Sports Network.
